Wine Quote
“The best wines are those that take you through themselves and out into another world that you could not have gotten to on your own. Great wine has a strange subterranean current of beauty. It is not something you can summon from a wine; but a great wine can take you there.”

Pinot Gris or Grigio?
Pinot Gris (French name) or Pinot Grigio,(Italian name) is one of the world’s most popular grapes. It has flavors of citrus, apple, and pear with aromas of floral bouquets. Regions most famous for this wine are Italy, US (Oregon & California), and France (Alsace). Made in an appropriate style, it agea well.
Wines can vary widely; but come down to basically two styles; the lighter-bodied, crisp Italian style and the heavier-bodied, rich, lush French style, Friuli, in Italy, produces the largest quantity; while Oregon is the ‘newest’ area to become famous for Pinot Gris Alsace, France is the traditional base of Pinot Gris and some of the most layered flavors (spice, orchard fruits, and muscular.
In Italy, Pinot Grigio can be quite distinguished, (especially from Friuli, Trentino or Colio regions), Unfortunately, there are many other makers that overcrop and harvest early produce crisp, but ‘thin’ wines.
There are winemakers in the United States (Central Coast, CA) putting serious efforts into growing and producing great Pinot Gris. Many Oregon wineries have had good success and are moving steadily away from making Chardonnay while increasing production of Pinot Gris.
Wine Word
Saignée-Making Rosé
Rosé is a refreshing summer ‘chilled’ wine which is very popular in Europe and becoming ever more popular in the US as well. Saignée (a French word) describes the ‘bleeding of the wine vats to remove juice during the early stages of fermentation when it is ‘pink’. This ‘pink’ juice is fermented separately to produce Rosé from red grapes. Rosé de Provence is world renown, but one of my favorites is the ‘organic’ In Situ Syrah Rosé (syrah from that valley in Chile has unique qualities).
